Physical Computing's Connected and Shape-Changing Future

چکیده

T echnologies have a way of unexpectedly upending established social practices, often at a pace far outstripping the ability of a given society to absorb or process disruptions with awareness. From stirrups to gunpowder to magnets, history teaches that even seemingly mundane objects have the capacity to change everything.1 Physical computing has become an umbrella term whose practitioners draw theoretical and practical inspiration from research in a cluster of associated research domains, including tangible interactions, human-material interactions, shape-changing interfaces, organic user interfaces, interactive materiality, and material ecology. For many, a common goal is to bridge analog and physical worlds by infusing objects with compute and sensemaking capabilities, in some cases enabling changes in a material’s physical characteristics. The most intriguing implementations also strip away layers of abstraction and allow people to interact directly with objects with fewer intermediate interfaces, potentially reducing interaction friction, improving legibility, and fulfilling unmet human needs (see the sidebar for a list of potential applications). The transformation of material objects into intelligent, informationrich ones holds great promise for fruitful partnerships between humans and technology. However, new opportunities also bring new challenges. It behooves us to examine how these new objects impact humans so that we can thoughtfully engineer systems that are mindful of our social practices— sidestepping potentially troubling outcomes and creating technologies worth having.

Shape is Physical

In a simplified vision the universe is made by two main ingredients: atoms and bits. Within this paradigm the shape of things is just the content of information associated with each thing. In this paper we briefly discuss the role of information in defining shapes and specifically address the connection between information, entropy and energy, with the aim of showing that changing shape of a ph...

Some Challenges of Designing Shape Changing Interfaces

In this paper we describe some challenges we find in the design of shape changing user interfaces through our own work and thoughts on the current state of the art in HCI. Due to the large set of possibilities for shape changing materials we are faced with a too-large constraint system. Without a good understanding and the beginning of a standardization or physical language for shape change it ...

How Awareness and Valuation of the Future Jointly Shape Intertemporal Financial Decisions

We examine people’s preferences about whether to engage in discretionary spending vs. save their money and find that reduced spending in the present requires the combination of both being motivated to provide for one’s future self (valuing the future) and actively considering long-term implications of one’s choices (awareness of the future). Feeling more connected to the future self—thinking th...

Evaluation of Optimal Fuzzy Membership Function for Wind Speed Forecasting

In this paper, a new approach is proposed in order to select an optimal membership function for inputs of wind speed prediction system. Then using a fuzzy method and the stochastic characteristics of wind speed in the previous year, the wind speed modeling is performed and the wind speed for the future year will be predicted. In this proposed method, the average and the standard deviation of in...

Tangible Holograms: Towards Mobile Physical Augmentation of Virtual Objects

The last two decades have seen the emergence and steady development of tangible user interfaces. While most of these interfaces are applied for input—with output still on traditional computer screens—the goal of programmable matter and actuated shape-changing materials is to directly use the physical objects for visual or tangible feedback. Advances in material sciences and flexible display tec...
